Take magnesium, for example; it’s a big deal, participating in over 300 bodily reactions, registered dietitian Patricia Bannan told TODAY. However, she pointed out that, “despite its importance, about half of U.S. adults don’t get enough magnesium from food.”

Boosting your magnesium levels doesn’t have to be a chore involving rare, pricey foods or supplements. You can up your intake simply by choosing foods readily available at any grocery store, reports Surrey Live.

The mineral is a powerhouse, supporting numerous functions in the body.

Magnesium might also help ease anxiety and mild depression symptoms and contribute to better sleep quality.

It’s good news for your heart, too; maintaining solid magnesium levels is beneficial for heart health.

A review even showed that folks with higher magnesium consumption had an 8% reduced risk of developing high blood pressure compared to those with lower intakes.

What fruit is high in magnesium?

Many fruits are rich in magnesium, but the passion fruit tops the list, boasting 68 grams of magnesium per cup. A study published in the Frontiers in Pharmacology journal revealed that “more than 110 phytochemical constituents” have been identified in the plant, demonstrating “a wide range of health effects and biological activities such as antioxidant, anti-hypertensive, anti-tumor, antidiabetic, hypolipidemic activities.”

The study further states: “These outstanding results suggest that passion fruit may offer a range of health benefits, such as managing inflammatory and neurological disease, and also preventing some chronic diseases like hypertension and hyperlipidemia.”

TODAY highlights that “the pulp of the aromatic fruit can be eaten raw, as a yogurt topping, or added to juices and drinks,” and it “also tops the list of fruits with the most protein.”

What other foods are high in magnesium?

There are numerous other excellent sources of magnesium.

According to Rebecca McManamon, a consultant dietitian and spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association, individuals who consume unsalted nuts, whole grains, a variety of fruits, green vegetables, and legumes on a daily basis are likely meeting the recommended daily intake of magnesium.

However, she cautioned, “If these are not foods you eat regularly, you may be at a higher risk of not getting enough magnesium.”
